Glass Mixing Bowls and Salad Bowls in Kenya: Sizes, Prices and Which One to Buy

Homelux Kenya |

A glass mixing bowl is the one bowl that does everything: mixing, baking, salad, serving and storage. This guide covers the sizes, what each one is for, what to check before buying and what glass bowls cost in Kenya right now, based on the Danny Home borosilicate range at Homelux Kenya.

Quick answer

For most Kenyan kitchens, a 2.7 litre glass mixing bowl is the one to buy first: it takes a cake batter, a loaf of bread dough or a salad for six. Add a 1 litre bowl for eggs and dressings and a 4.4 or 5.7 litre bowl if you make chapati dough for a family or host parties. Borosilicate glass bowls are oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe; ordinary soda lime glass bowls are not oven safe, so check the label.

Can you bake in a glass mixing bowl?

Yes, if it is borosilicate glass. Borosilicate is the heat resistant glass used for oven dishes and laboratory glass; it handles oven temperatures and the move from fridge to oven, as long as the bowl is not put into a hot oven straight from the freezer. You can mix a bread pudding, a crumble, baked oats or macaroni cheese in the bowl and bake it in the same bowl. Two rules: never use a glass bowl on a gas or electric hob, and never put a hot bowl down on a wet or cold surface.

Glass, ceramic, stainless steel or plastic?

Glass is the best all rounder: it does not stain, scratch or hold the smell of onions and garlic, you can see the mix from the side, and borosilicate goes in the oven and microwave. Ceramic bowls look good on the table and keep soup hot, but they are heavy and most are not for mixing. Stainless steel mixing bowls are light and unbreakable, good for big dough and camping, but they cannot go in the microwave. Plastic is cheap and light but stains with tomato and curry and scratches, and scratched plastic holds bacteria.

What to check before you buy

  • Material: look for the word borosilicate if you want to bake or microwave; tempered glass is strong but not always oven safe
  • Capacity in millilitres, not just small, medium and large; a 27cm bowl is usually about 4 to 4.5 litres
  • A wide, flat base so the bowl does not rock while you whisk
  • Nesting: sizes that stack inside each other save cupboard space
  • Lids: a bowl with a lid doubles as fridge storage; if the bowl has no lid, a plate on top works for the fridge

Frequently asked questions

What is the best size mixing bowl for cake batter? 2.7 litres. It holds a standard two egg or three egg batter with room to beat without splashing.

What size bowl for chapati dough? 4.4 litres for a family batch of 10 to 12 chapatis; 5.7 litres if you make dough for an event.

Is a glass mixing bowl microwave safe? Borosilicate glass bowls are microwave safe. Remove any metal lid or clip first.

Can a glass mixing bowl go in the dishwasher? Yes. Borosilicate glass is dishwasher safe and does not cloud the way thin glass does.

How much does a glass mixing bowl cost in Kenya? At Homelux Kenya the Danny Home range runs from KSh 399 for the 500ml bowl to KSh 2,399 for the 5.7 litre bowl, with the popular 2.7 litre size at KSh 1,799 as of October 2026.

Can I use a glass bowl as a salad bowl and a serving bowl? Yes, that is the point of clear glass: it goes with every dinner set, so the same bowl mixes the salad and serves it.
