A hot pot, also called an insulated casserole or a food warmer set, is a double walled serving dish that keeps cooked food hot for four to six hours with no flame, no fuel and no electricity. It is the dish that carries chapati and stew to a family gathering, keeps Sunday lunch warm until everyone is back from church, and sits on the Christmas table from the first plate to the last. This guide covers the sizes, what a 4 piece set actually holds, stainless steel inner versus plastic, the brands sold in Kenya, and current hot pot prices, based on the range at Homelux Kenya.
Quick answer
For a family of four to six, a 4 piece hot pot set with a stainless steel inner, sizes from about 1 to 3 litres, is the one to buy: Milton, Signature and Redberry all make one for KSh 4,000 to 7,000. For a household that hosts, or for carrying food to events, step up to a set where the largest pot is 4 to 6 litres, or a 6 piece set that goes up to 10 litres. For gifting and the dining table, the oval and marble finish sets look like serving dishes and keep food just as hot.
Hot pot sizes and what they hold
| Capacity | Holds | Serves |
|---|---|---|
| 500ml to 800ml | Sauce, kachumbari, a single portion of stew | 1 to 2 |
| 1000ml to 1200ml | Rice for two, 6 to 8 chapatis, a small stew | 2 to 3 |
| 1500ml to 2000ml | Stew for a family, rice for four, 12 chapatis | 4 to 5 |
| 2500ml to 3000ml | Pilau for a family, ugali, a full sufuria of beef stew | 6 to 8 |
| 4000ml to 5000ml | Rice or stew for a gathering | 10 to 14 |
| 6000ml to 10000ml | Event portions, church lunch, chama meetings | 15 to 25 |
A standard 4 piece set is usually 500ml, 1000ml, 1500ml and 2000ml or 800ml, 1200ml, 2000ml and 3000ml. The second format is the more useful one for a Kenyan family meal because the 3 litre pot takes a whole sufuria of stew.

Stainless steel inner or plastic inner
Every hot pot has an outer shell, a layer of insulation and an inner bowl. Buy a set with a stainless steel inner. Steel does not stain with tomato or turmeric, does not hold the smell of fish or nyama, can take food straight from the sufuria while it is still boiling, and lasts for years. Plastic inners are cheaper but crack, stain and warp with very hot food. Milton, Signature and Redberry sets sold at Homelux all have stainless steel inners. The outer shell can be plastic, stainless steel or a painted finish; it only affects looks and weight.
How long does a hot pot keep food hot?
Four to six hours above safe serving temperature if you fill it with food straight off the cooker and close the lid at once. Three things make the difference: fill the pot at least two thirds, because air space cools food faster; warm the pot with hot water for two minutes before adding the food; and do not open it to check. A full 3 litre pot of stew filled at 11am is still properly hot at 4pm. Hot pots also keep food cold for a picnic if you chill the pot first.
Hot pots or chafing dishes?
Hot pots suit the family table and carrying food, because they need no fuel and are safe around children. Chafing dishes suit buffets and events where food sits out for several hours and guests serve themselves, because the flame keeps it hot indefinitely. Many hosts use both: chafing dishes for rice and stew on the buffet, hot pots for chapati, kachumbari and dessert. Our chafing dishes guide covers sizes and prices for those.
What to check before you buy
- Stainless steel inner, not plastic
- The largest pot in the set: 2 litres is enough for a couple, 3 litres for a family, 5 litres or more for hosting
- A lid that locks or clips if you will carry food in a car
- Handles on the larger pots; a full 5 litre pot is heavy
- Whether the pots nest inside each other for storage
- Finish: plain stainless or white for the kitchen, marble, gold or silver plated for the dining table and gifts

Frequently asked questions
How much is a hot pot set in Kenya? At Homelux Kenya 4 piece hot pot sets run from KSh 3,500 to KSh 6,600, a 6 piece set up to 10 litres is KSh 9,999, and oval and marble finish gift sets run from KSh 16,500 to KSh 29,999 as of October 2026.
Which hot pot brand is best in Kenya? Milton is the most widely used and has the longest track record; Signature and Redberry offer the same stainless steel inner at a similar price. Choose by the sizes in the set rather than the brand name.
Can I put a hot pot in the microwave? No. The insulated shell should not go in a microwave or oven. Heat the food in a sufuria or microwave dish, then transfer it to the hot pot.
Can hot pots keep food cold? Yes. Chill the pot with cold water first and it keeps salads, fruit and drinks cold for several hours.
How do I clean a hot pot? Hand wash the inner and lid with warm soapy water and dry before closing. Do not soak the whole pot, as water can get between the walls.
What size hot pot for chapati? A 2 to 3 litre pot holds 12 to 20 chapatis stacked and keeps them soft for hours.
