Boiled vegetables lose half their colour and most of their taste to the water. Steaming keeps both, but a dedicated steamer is another bulky thing to store, and the cheap metal baskets scratch the inside of a good non-stick pan.

Bloom opens out inside almost any pan you already own — anything from 18cm across — and closes into a flat disc that slides in beside the chopping boards. The silicone feet and side fins sit against the pan rather than bare metal, so it is safe to use in non-stick cookware, and the fork hook lets you lift it out without burning your fingers on steam. Good for sukuma wiki, carrots, cassava, githeri or fish. Use about 2.5cm of water to start, and a pan at least 10.5cm deep if you are putting a lid on. Dishwasher safe.
