Counter-top spiralizers are a commitment: they clamp to the worktop, take up a shelf and are rarely worth assembling for one courgette. But vegetable noodles are a genuinely good way to stretch a meal or cut down on starch. The SpiroGo does the same job at hand-held scale.

You twist the vegetable into the cone and it comes out as uniform curly noodles, ready for a stir-fry, a salad or a bowl of sauce. Courgettes, carrots and cucumbers all work. The stainless-steel blade is sharp enough to cut cleanly rather than tear, the long handle gives you something solid to hold, and a detachable finger guard with a food grip takes over once the piece gets short. It is dishwasher safe and small enough to store in a drawer, which is the point. Keep fingers away from the blade during use and cleaning, and note that strongly coloured vegetables such as carrots may cause mild staining.
