Every school holiday the same question comes up on parents' WhatsApp groups: which tablet should I buy for my child that is actually for learning, not just YouTube? In Kenya the answer most parents land on is Elimutab, a kids tablet designed in Nairobi with the CBC curriculum built in. This guide explains what Elimutab is, what comes preloaded, how the parental controls work, and which of the models we stock at Homelux Kenya suits which age.
What is Elimutab?
Elimutab is a Kenyan education technology company based in Nairobi that makes kid-safe learning tablets, classroom smart screens and STEM kits. The tablets run Android with a locked-down kids mode, and they come loaded with learning content aligned to the CBC, Cambridge, Montessori and 8-4-4 curricula. The company says its tablets are used by more than 50,000 parents and over 100 Kenyan schools.
The difference from a normal Android tablet is not the hardware. It is that the content, the app store and the browser are set up for a child from the first switch-on, and a parent controls all of it from their own phone.
What comes preloaded
Elimutab organises content by grade so a child opens the tablet and finds their own class, not a general app store.
- Lower primary (Grade 1 to 3): Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Environmental Activities, Hygiene and Nutrition.
- Upper primary (Grade 4 to 8): Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Science and Technology, CRE, Social Studies, Home Science, Agriculture, Music, Art and Craft.
- Formats: courses, eBooks, past exams and quizzes, and curated educational videos, all teacher-approved and meant to supplement what the child covers in class.
- Beyond the syllabus: the larger models add coding programmes, foreign language learning and international content for Cambridge and Montessori families.
Parental controls: what a parent can actually do
This is the reason to buy an Elimutab rather than a cheap generic tablet. The parental control app lets you:
- Create a separate profile for each child on the same tablet, with content matched to their grade.
- Set daily time limits, so the tablet locks itself when the hour is up.
- Block specific apps and websites, and keep the child inside a kids-only browser.
- Control and monitor everything remotely from your smartphone, even when you are at work.
- See usage reports showing how much time went to learning apps, games and videos.
A parent in Nairobi can set the tablet to one hour of maths after school and see the report from the office. That is the whole point.

Which Elimutab should you buy?
Pre-school to Grade 2: the 7 inch ET05. Small children hold a 7 inch tablet comfortably in both hands, it survives being dropped better because it weighs less, and the content at this level is games, letters, numbers and Kiswahili sounds that do not need a big screen.
Grade 3 to Grade 8: a 10.1 inch model, the ET03 or ET02 Pro. Once a child is reading eBooks, doing past papers and watching lesson videos, the larger screen matters more than anything else. This is also the size that works for online classes and the school portal.
Secondary school: the ET02 Pro. It is rated to age 17, handles Cambridge and 8-4-4 content, and a keyboard case turns it into a small laptop for typing assignments.
More than one child: buy one 10.1 inch tablet and set up a profile per child. The parental control app keeps each child's content and time limits separate.
Questions parents ask us in the showroom
Does it need internet? The preloaded content works offline. Internet is needed for videos, online classes and to update content. Wi-Fi is standard; the 10.1 inch models also take a SIM.
Can my child get onto YouTube or TikTok? Only if you allow it. The kids mode blocks the normal app store and browser, and the parent app lets you blacklist any app or site.
Is the content for CBC or 8-4-4? Both, plus Cambridge and Montessori. You choose the curriculum and grade when setting up each child's profile.
What about screen time? Set a daily limit per child in the parent app. The tablet locks when the time is used up and the report shows you how the time was spent.
Is it just a tablet with apps? The hardware is a standard Android tablet. What you pay for is the curriculum content, the locked kids system and the parent app, which a generic tablet does not have.
