Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a spice rack cost in Kenya?

Spice racks in Kenya start around KSh 900 for a simple countertop rack and rise to KSh 4,000 or more for larger wall-mounted units and rotating carousels with jars included. Sets that come with labelled glass jars cost more but save you buying jars separately. Homelux stocks countertop, wall-mounted and drawer options.

Should I store spices in glass or plastic jars?

Glass, where you can. Glass does not absorb oils or odours, does not stain from turmeric or paprika, and does not react with the spice. Plastic is lighter and cheaper but retains smells between refills. Whichever you choose, an airtight seal matters more than the material for keeping spices potent.

Where should a spice rack go in the kitchen?

Near the cooker for convenience, but not directly above it — steam and heat degrade spices quickly and cause clumping. A wall rack beside the hob, or a drawer insert near your prep area, is the better compromise. Keep spices out of direct sunlight, which fades both colour and flavour.

How long do spices actually last?

Ground spices hold their strength for roughly six months to a year; whole spices like cumin seed, cardamom and cloves last two to three years. In Kenyan humidity, ground spices clump sooner, which is a sign moisture is getting in. If a spice no longer smells strong when you open the jar, it will not season your food.

Do your spice racks come with jars?

Some sets include labelled glass jars and some are the rack alone — the listing states which. If you already own jars, measure their diameter and height before ordering a rack, since jar sizes vary and a rack sized for slim jars will not hold wider ones. Ask us on 0723 784 736 if you are unsure.
