The monthly fee question — read this before you buy
This is the difference that costs people money in year two. Many security cameras store footage in the cloud and charge a monthly subscription to keep more than a day or two of it. Over three years that subscription can exceed the price of the camera.
Eufy's defining feature is local storage. Footage is kept on a microSD card in the camera or on a HomeBase you own, with no monthly fee required. IMOU, Ezviz and Xiaomi all support microSD cards too, so you can run any of them without a subscription — but their apps push cloud plans, and it is easy to end up paying by default. Check the storage setting when you set the camera up.

Eufy — best AI detection, no monthly fees
Eufy's on-device AI distinguishes people from pets, vehicles and moving branches, which in practice means you get alerts that matter instead of a phone buzzing every time a bird crosses the compound. Everything records locally. It is the most expensive of the four, and for a single indoor camera that premium is hard to justify — but across a four-camera setup, the difference in false alerts is the difference between using the system and muting it.
IMOU — best value outdoors
IMOU is the practical workhorse in this list. The IP65 and IP67 outdoor models at KSh 8,999 handle Kenyan rain and dust, give colour night vision, and cost roughly a third of a premium outdoor camera. Human detection is decent rather than excellent. For a shop, gate or compound where you want coverage without a large budget, this is the sensible choice.
Ezviz — solid middle ground
Ezviz sits between IMOU and Eufy on both price and capability. The C2C at KSh 5,800 is a reliable indoor nanny and pet camera, and the outdoor model at KSh 9,999 is dependable. Nothing about the range stands out, which is not a criticism — it is well-built, widely supported equipment at a fair price.
Xiaomi — cheapest way in
The C201 at KSh 3,610 is the lowest-cost credible camera here, and the C300 at KSh 7,160 gives you 2K resolution for less than most rivals. All of them run through the Mi Home app, so if you already have Xiaomi devices they join the same system. These are indoor cameras — do not mount them outside.
If you have no reliable WiFi at the site
This is common on plots, construction sites, farms and shops where nobody wants to run a router. Two options here work without WiFi entirely: the 4G Solar Floodlight PTZ at KSh 23,999 and the Eufy S330 4K 4G Solar at KSh 39,999. Both take a SIM card and charge from a built-in solar panel, so they need neither internet nor mains power.
Budget for data. A 4G camera streaming continuously will consume a serious amount of bundle, so set it to record on motion rather than continuously, and use a data plan sized for it.
How many cameras do you actually need?
For a typical Nairobi home, three covers the important ground: one on the gate or main entrance, one on the compound or parking area, and one indoors covering the main living space. A shop generally needs one on the till, one on the door and one on the stockroom. Buying six cameras and covering every angle sounds thorough but usually means nobody reviews any of the footage.
Practical installation notes for Kenya
Mount outdoor cameras at least three metres up, out of easy reach. Point them away from direct sun where you can, since strong backlight washes out faces at exactly the times you need them. If you are using solar models, check the panel gets genuine direct sun for several hours — under a roof overhang it will not charge properly. And set up the microSD card at installation, not later, because a camera that has recorded nothing is worth nothing on the day something happens.
