Some things should never meet an iron. A lined suit jacket, a pleated dress, a silk shirt, a set of curtains still hanging on the rail — press any of them flat and you crush the shape out of them. A garment steamer relaxes the fibres with steam instead of flattening them with a hot plate, so the wrinkles drop out and the garment keeps its structure.

This is the standing version, not a handheld. The large water tank sits in the base, which is the whole point: you can work through a full week of shirts, or an entire set of curtains, without stopping every few minutes to refill. The pole adjusts for anything from a shirt to a floor-length dress or drape.

The hanger and the padded glove board at the top let you steam a shirt or jacket while it hangs — board behind the fabric, steam head in front, so you get resistance to press against instead of chasing a loose garment around.

Key Features

  • Powerful continuous steam — drops wrinkles out of suits, dresses, curtains and sofa fabric
  • Built-in hanger and glove board — steam shirts and jackets while they hang
  • Large base-mounted water tank — works through a full load without constant refilling
  • Adjustable pole — handles shirts through to floor-length dresses and curtains
  • Vertical steaming — no ironing board, and safe on fabrics an iron would ruin
  • Professional design — the format used in boutiques and hotels

What it is good for

Suits and blazers. Dresses, especially pleated and lined ones. Curtains and drapes, steamed on the rail without taking them down. Sofa and cushion fabric. Duvets and bedding. School uniforms in bulk. And anything with beading, sequins or a print that an iron would melt or lift.

It is not a replacement for an iron on a cotton shirt collar or a sharp trouser crease — that still needs pressure and a soleplate. Most households want both.

Using it well

Steam from top to bottom in slow passes, keeping the head just off the fabric. Nairobi tap water is hard in many estates — if yours leaves white scale on the kettle, use filtered or distilled water and the steamer will last considerably longer. Empty the tank after use rather than leaving water standing in it.
