Glass Baking Dish Prices in Kenya 2026: Sizes, Sets and Borosilicate vs Tempered Glass

Homelux Kenya |

A glass baking dish in Kenya costs from about 1,300 shillings for a single 1 litre borosilicate pan to about 4,000 for a three piece set or a lidded casserole set. The price depends on the size, whether it is sold singly or as a nested set, whether it has a lid, and whether it is borosilicate glass that can go straight from the freezer to the oven. This guide gives current prices for the glass bakeware in stock at Homelux Kenya in Nairobi, which size to buy for which dish, and what to check before you buy.

Quick answer

For most Kenyan kitchens the right first buy is a 2 to 2.2 litre rectangular borosilicate glass dish at about 1,700 to 2,000, or a set of two rectangular dishes (2.2L and 3L) at about 2,500. That covers lasagna, baked rice, roast chicken, queen cakes, bread pudding and reheating. Add a 1 litre pan for sides and single portions, and a lidded casserole set if you want to bake, serve and store leftovers in the same dish.

Borosilicate or tempered glass

Borosilicate glass is made with boron, which lets it take a sudden change in temperature without cracking, so a dish can go from the fridge or freezer into a hot oven and from the oven onto the table. It is what the original Pyrex was made of. Tempered soda lime glass is stronger against knocks but can shatter with thermal shock, so it needs to warm up before it goes into a hot oven and must never meet cold water while hot. Both are safe in a preheated oven to about 400 degrees, in the microwave and in the dishwasher. The Danny Home and high borosilicate dishes at Homelux are borosilicate; the product page says which type each dish is.

Glass, metal or ceramic for baking

Glass holds heat and browns the base evenly, which suits casseroles, baked pasta, roasts, puddings and sheet cakes, and it lets you see the bottom so nothing burns. It heats more slowly than metal, so cakes take a few minutes longer and you should drop the oven by about 10 degrees for recipes written for metal tins. Metal tins are the right choice for layer cakes, bread loaves and biscuits where you want a quick rise and a thin crust. Ceramic dishes look best on the table but weigh more and cost more for the same size. Most kitchens end up with glass for everyday oven cooking and one or two metal tins for cakes and bread.

What to check before you buy

  • Borosilicate for freezer to oven use; tempered glass needs to warm up first
  • Capacity in litres, which matters more than the length; 2.2L is the family size
  • Rectangular for the oven shelf and the fridge, oval for roasting and serving
  • Handles or a lip on the short ends, so you can lift a full hot dish with mitts
  • A lid if you will store leftovers in the dish; glass lids go in the oven, plastic lids do not
  • Thickness: a thin dish cracks sooner; lift it and compare the weight
  • Whether it fits your oven; most Kenyan 60cm ovens take a 3L dish with room to spare, table top ovens may not

How to make a glass dish last

Put the dish into a preheated oven rather than a cold one, do not use it on a gas ring, a hot plate or under a grill element, and never pour cold water into it or set it on a wet surface while hot. Leave a little space at the top, since food that boils over sticks to the rim. Let it cool on a wooden board or a dry cloth, then soak; a paste of baking soda lifts burnt sugar and cheese. Looked after this way a borosilicate dish lasts for decades.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a glass baking dish in Kenya? At Homelux Kenya a single borosilicate glass baking pan is KSh 1,299 for 1L up to KSh 1,999 for 2.2L, two piece sets are KSh 2,500 to 3,499, and three and four piece sets and lidded casserole sets are KSh 3,499 to 3,999 as of October 2026.

Can a glass dish go straight from the fridge to the oven? A borosilicate dish can. A tempered glass dish should stand at room temperature for 15 to 20 minutes first.

What temperature can glass bakeware take? Up to about 400 degrees in a conventional oven. Keep it away from direct flame and grill elements.

Can I bake a cake in a glass dish? Yes. Grease it well, lower the oven by about 10 degrees and allow a few more minutes. Sheet cakes, brownies and puddings come out well; use a metal tin for tall layer cakes.

Is glass better than aluminium for baking? Glass is better for casseroles, roasts and anything you serve from the dish, and it does not react with tomato or lemon. Aluminium is better for quick, even baking of bread and layer cakes.

What size glass dish for lasagna? 2.2L for four people, 3L for six to eight.

Do the sets nest for storage? Yes, the two and three piece sets stack inside each other.
