How do I measure my sofa for a cover?

Do stretch sofa covers stay in place?
Good ones do. Look for covers with elasticated hems and foam grip strips that tuck into the crevices between the seat and the back — that is what stops slipping, not the fabric itself. Re-tuck the grips every few weeks. Covers without grips will need adjusting daily on a well-used sofa.
Will a cover fit my recliner?
Only a cover made specifically for recliners will. Recliners need a cover cut in separate sections so the footrest and backrest still move freely; a standard sofa cover restricts the mechanism and tears at the seams. Check the listing says recliner before ordering, and tell us whether yours is a single or two-seater.
Are sofa covers machine washable?
Most stretch polyester and spandex covers wash on a cold gentle cycle and dry in shade. Do not tumble dry, as heat destroys the elastic that gives the cover its grip. Velvet covers do better on a hand wash or delicate cycle. Remove and wash covers every four to six weeks in a busy household.
