Nyama choma on a weeknight without lighting a jiko. The DSP electric grill plate runs on a socket, heats in minutes and cooks meat, chicken, sausages and toasted sandwiches on a non-stick plate that wipes clean.

The plate is 29 by 24cm. Close the lid to 105° and it works as a contact grill, pressing a sandwich or a chicken fillet from both sides. Open it flat to 180° and you get two grilling surfaces side by side, enough for a family. A 2200W element brings it to temperature fast, the thermostat sets the heat for what you are cooking, and the 30 minute timer switches it off so nothing burns while you step away. Built in overheating protection cuts the power if the plate runs too hot.

It suits apartments and rentals where a charcoal grill is not an option, and it is small enough to live in a cupboard between uses.

Good to know

Let the plate heat for three to five minutes before the first piece goes on. Wipe with a damp cloth once it has cooled; avoid metal tools on the non-stick surface.
