You sit it on top of the can and twist. It grips the rim automatically as it turns, and the long handle gives you leverage so the cutting takes very little effort, which helps if your grip is not what it was. A lid-release button drops the cut lid away without you touching the sharp edge, and there is a small integrated hook for lifting stubborn ring-pulls, the ones that usually cost a fingernail. Note that this one is not dishwasher safe: wipe it clean with a damp cloth and do not submerge it in water.
