The surface is soft TPR rubber, so glasses and crockery land on give rather than on granite. Ribbed channels run across it: an upturned cup sits on the ridges instead of flat, air gets underneath, and the water it sheds is carried away to the edge rather than pooling under the rim. Fold the mat along its hinge for a narrow strip when you have only a few mugs, or open it out fully after a big cook or a Sunday of hosting. When everything is dry it folds down to 0.8 cm thick and slides in beside the sink or into a drawer. Through the long rains, when nothing air-dries on its own, a mat that actually moves water off the dishes is worth having.
