Matchstick carrot for a salad or a stir-fry is a ten-minute knife job if you do it properly, and most people give up and grate instead. A julienne peeler turns it into three or four passes. Hold the vegetable, draw the blade down it, and you get even strips of carrot, courgette, raw pawpaw or green mango without touching a chopping board.

This is the Y-shaped version, which is the easier shape to control on long vegetables – you pull it down and away rather than towards your thumb. The blade is stainless steel, and there is a channel knife on the body for stripping zest or scoring a cucumber before slicing it. A protective guard clips over the blade so it can live in a drawer safely. Dishwasher safe when you are done.
