Draining a pot of pasta or a pan of sukuma over the sink means lifting something heavy and hot with both hands and trusting the colander sitting in the sink not to move. Half the time a handful of it ends up in the drain. The Scoop colander removes the pan from the equation — you lift the food out instead of tipping everything.

It is a scoop, a strainer and a serving tool in one long-handled piece. Dip it into boiling water or drag it across a hot baking tray, lift, and the liquid runs away through the slots while the food stays in the bowl of the scoop. Discreet hooks let it rest on the side of the pan so it carries on draining while you finish the rest of the meal, then it goes straight to the table to serve. Toughened nylon means it handles pan heat without complaint, and it is dishwasher safe. At roughly 34 cm it is sized for everyday Kenyan cooking: draining spaghetti, lifting boiled potatoes and arrowroot, straining vegetables, and taking mandazi or samosas out of hot oil. Red has since been dropped from Joseph Joseph's range, so this colourway is discontinued.
