Draining a pot of pasta or a pan of boiled greens usually means finding a full-size colander, balancing it in the sink and then washing one more thing. The Scoop Plus does the lifting and the draining in a single movement – a wide slotted head goes into the water, comes out full, and the liquid runs straight back into the pan.

The head is toughened nylon rather than metal, so it will not score a non-stick sufuria or frying pan, and it is rated to 200°C – hot enough to leave resting against the side of a simmering pot while the rest of the meal catches up. At 34 cm long it keeps your hand clear of the steam, which counts on a crowded Nairobi hob where the kettle and the pan are always fighting for space. This is the red colourway, and the whole tool goes in the dishwasher afterwards.
