Peeling garlic by hand is the small job that quietly slows down a whole evening — papery skins stuck under your nails, and a smell on your fingers that stays through supper. If you cook with a full head at a time, as most Kenyan kitchens do for pilau, stews and marinades, it is easily the slowest part of the prep.

The Scroll is a 28cm silicone tube that does the whole lot in one motion. Drop the cloves inside, roll it firmly on the worktop a few times, and the polished silicone interior grips the skins and works them loose from the bulbs. Tip out clean cloves, shake out the skins. The important detail is that it unrolls completely flat, so there is no narrow tube to poke debris out of — you open it, rinse it, and it goes in the dishwasher. Rolled up it takes almost no drawer space.
