Joseph Joseph Square Colander Small 16cm – Non-Slip Vertical Handle

Let go of a round colander in a full sink and it tips, slides and pours half of what you just drained straight back into the water. It always happens with the other hand full, holding a hot pan you cannot put down.

Joseph Joseph's answer was a single vertical handle rather than two side lugs. Put the colander down and it stands upright and steady, so one hand is free for the pan. The handle is wrapped in non-slip silicone for wet hands, the drainage holes run vertically so water leaves fast, and the square corners let you empty it out cleanly and stack it flat in a cupboard. It is dishwasher safe, and simple enough to rinse under a tap when the estate water is rationed. This is the small size from the Small/Medium generation, which Joseph Joseph have since replaced with a redesigned single-size colander.
